A housewife, Maryam Sanda who was alleged to have stabbed and killed her husband, Bilyamin Bello has engaged the service of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria ( SAN ), Joseph Daudu to defend her in the murder case brought against her. Mr. Daudu himself faced a series of allegations of domestic abuse and wife battery after his wife, Ranti Daudu suddenly died in July 2017
Today, Daudu led a consortium of lawyers to the court to defend Maryam when the matter resumed for hearing before an Abuja high court. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police has filed an application before the court to amend the charges brought against Maryam after the preliminary investigation .
The prosecution counsel, James Idachaba told the court that after the conclusion of their investigation they have come with the amended version of the charge which includes fresh evidence which revealed that some persons colluded with the accused to tamper with evidence of the alleged murder.
He noted that those who were alleged to have tampered with the evidence were also joined as an accessory after the fact of homicide. He urged the court to ignore the bail application moved by the defence in the interest of justice noting that such application can be entertained on the next adjourned day.
The defence counsel who is also the former Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association prayed the court to grant his client bail pending the determination of the suit. There was a mild drama in the court when the presiding judge, Yusu Halilu told Maryam when she entered the dock to remove her veil from her face to enable him see her. Also some members of her family were seen shielding her from photojournalists and hurling curses on them as she arrived court escorted by prison warders.
Presiding judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu rejected the bail application sought by the defence adding that he will only entertain the bail application on the next adjourned day . He asked the prosecution to compile the amended charges and make it available to the court.
The case was adjourned to Thursday 14th December which coincided with the day when the case of her mother, Maimuna Aliyu will also come up for hearing. Her mother was sighted in the court today.
Mrs. Sanda, the daughter of a former Aso Savings boss, Maimuna Aliyu, had been married to Mr. Haliru-Bello, whose father is also a former minister and ex-chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, two years before the attack.
Mrs. Aliyu is billed to be arraigned for corruption-related offenses while the late husband’s father Bello is currently under trial for corruption related to the looting of the Nigerian treasury during the 2015 general elections.
